Final equipment choice is confirmed once we have seen the site and the excavation drawings.
Plan around the work
Expect machinery on site for a defined period depending on the size and depth of the dig, and steady truck movements while spoil is carted away. Driveways and access paths may be temporarily restricted while machinery is working nearby, and planting on the machine route can be affected. We keep noise and mess contained to the immediate work area and clean down access routes at the end of each day.

Pool excavation is one of the few earthworks jobs where the dimensions are set by somebody else and have to be met exactly. Getting levels or the footprint wrong delays your installer or leaves a shell sitting incorrectly, and correcting it means re-excavating around a hole that is already dug. The other two things that decide how the job runs are spoil and water: a suburban section cannot absorb the volume that comes out, and a shallow water table needs managing while the excavation is open rather than on the morning the shell is delivered.
Do you install the pool as well as excavate for it?
No. We excavate the hole to your pool supplier's or installer's drawings and levels and hand it over ready for them. The shell, plumbing, filtration and finishing are their work.
How do you know how deep and wide to dig?
From the excavation drawings your pool supplier or installer provides. Those give the footprint, depth profile and any over-dig allowance the shell needs, and we work to them rather than to a general shape.
What happens to the excavated soil?
Most of it leaves. A pool excavation produces a large volume and few suburban sections can absorb it, so cartage is planned and priced from the outset. Where some can usefully stay on site for landscaping, we will say so.
Can you work around tight backyard access?
Usually yes, with a smaller machine and more truck movements, which affects both the programme and the price. We assess the access at the site visit rather than discovering it on the day.
What if we hit groundwater?
It is not unusual in parts of Christchurch. Water met during the dig is managed while the excavation is open so the base stays sound, and we tell you early if the water table looks likely to affect the programme.
Can you remove an old pool instead?
Yes, but that is a different job and it sits on our concrete removal page — breaking out and removing a concrete shell, then backfilling and compacting the void. Ask us either way and we will point you to the right one.
