How we approach the ground
A straightforward way of working
Good earthworks come from a clear scope, not a bigger machine. Before we touch the ground we want to understand what the finished site needs to do — support a foundation, drain properly, carry vehicle loads, or simply look tidy — and who else is involved, including your builder, drainlayer, structural designer or geotechnical engineer where one is needed.
We work across residential sections, new builds, subdivisions, lifestyle blocks and small commercial sites in Christchurch City, Selwyn and Waimakariri. Every job starts with a site look — in person or from your photos and plans — before we put a number on anything.
What happens on-site, step by step
Our project process
The exact sequence depends on your site, but most projects move through the same four stages.
Assessment
We look at the site, your plans and access before we quote — not just the finished footprint.
Excavation & earthworks
Cut, fill, trenching or clearing carried out to the agreed scope, sequenced around other trades.
Compaction & finishing
Backfill, compaction and grading brought to the levels your next trade or surface needs.
Handover
A walk-through against the written scope, with any inspection or disposal records you need.
Matching machinery to your site
Plant & equipment
Machine selection depends on access, ground conditions and the volume of material involved — a wide, open section and a narrow side-access job need very different equipment. Our fleet details will be published here once confirmed; in the meantime, tell us your access measurements and we will confirm what's suitable for your site before you book anything.
Where our scope ends
Where we draw the line
Earthworks sits alongside several licensed and regulated trades. We're upfront about where our scope ends:
- Drainlaying — we excavate for drainage and coordinate with your licensed drainlayer; we do not install, connect or certify drainage systems ourselves.
- Geotechnical engineering — we work from geotechnical reports and alongside geotechnical engineers; we do not produce or sign off soil reports, liquefaction assessments or foundation designs.
- Structural design — for retaining walls and foundations, the design and engineering sign-off is the responsibility of your designer or engineer; we excavate and prepare ground to their specification.
Working safely around services and slopes
Safety & site care
Buried services, unstable ground and exposed excavations all need a plan before work starts. We follow WorkSafe's excavation guidance and check known services through beforeU dig before digging near them, and we plan sediment and erosion control with reference to Environment Canterbury's guidance where a site needs it.
