We review your site, plans and access before quoting — in person or from photos and measurements.
Cutting, filling, clearing or trenching to the agreed scope, sequenced around your other trades.
Backfill and compaction brought to the levels your build, driveway or landscape needs.
A walk-through against the written scope, with any records the next trade or inspector needs.
Why Christchurch Earthworks
We measure the real route in and out before we quote, not just the finished footprint.
You deal with the person running your job, not a call centre.
What's included, what's excluded, and who signs off before the ground closes over.
Drainlaying, engineering and design go to the right licensed specialist — we say so upfront.

Sites & properties we work on
Christchurch, Selwyn & Waimakariri
From established Christchurch suburbs to the growth areas of Selwyn and Waimakariri, mention your suburb when you enquire so we can confirm coverage and travel time.
A few things to know
Your site address or suburb, the type of project (site prep, driveway, retaining wall, trenching, demolition, subdivision or other), rough dimensions, access notes and your desired timeframe. Photos of the site and access route speed things up. Share as much as you have on the contact page and we will confirm the rest.
It depends on access, ground conditions, the volume of material to move, disposal distance and whether imported material is needed. We do not publish fixed rates because two similar-looking sites can price very differently. See our cost-factors guide, then request a specific quote for your site.
We work across Christchurch and into the Selwyn and Waimakariri districts. Check our locations page for the specific areas we cover, and mention your suburb when you enquire so we can confirm coverage and travel time for your job.
It depends on your zone, the depth and volume of the work, slope, proximity to waterways and other site-specific factors. Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council and Waimakariri District Council each publish their own earthworks and resource consent rules. We can flag likely triggers, but you should confirm requirements with your council or planner before committing to a programme.
Yes — send us photos and measurements of the narrowest point on your access route (width, height clearance and any corners) and we will talk you through what is realistic before you book anything.
We excavate for drainage, retaining walls and foundations, and we build and repair retaining walls ourselves. We coordinate closely with the licensed drainlayers, structural designers and geotechnical engineers other parts of a job need — but we are not a drainlaying, engineering or design business ourselves. If your project needs one of those specialists, we can work alongside them or point you in the right direction.
The groundwork journal
What actually moves an earthworks price — access, ground conditions, volume of cut and fill, disposal and consents.
Everything to sort before you build: site plans, buried services, access width, trees, consents and the order trades arrive.
What the earthquake-era land classifications meant, why they still show up in property records, and how to check yours.
What a geotechnical report contains, when councils here expect one, and how an earthworks crew works from it.
When a Christchurch section actually needs a retaining wall, who designs it, and where consent and drainage fit in.
What happens under a driveway — excavation depth, base layers, compaction and the falls that keep water moving away.
Why compaction decides whether a platform holds, how sites get tested, and where it sits in a build programme.
What to check before any trench goes in, what beforeUdig does and does not cover, and who to involve.
How a small demolition actually unfolds: hazard checks, service disconnections, waste sorting and the timeframes to expect.
A staged view of subdivision earthworks, from bulk cut and fill through roading to handing platforms to builders.
How access, ground, reach and job type decide machine size, and what to measure before asking for a quote.
Topsoil, subsoil, engineered fill and aggregate explained in plain terms, with how to estimate what your project needs.
How stormwater is handled on a Canterbury property, and why local soil decides whether soakage works at all.
What removing an in-ground pool involves — shell type, disconnections, excavation, backfill and getting the ground usable again.
Earthworks that rural Canterbury properties need, from farm tracks and culverts to septic fields and shed pads.
A plain overview of how EQC cover and insurance claims can relate to ground remediation work on your property.
